JOHN WILLIAM TAGGART
J. W. Taggart was born in McDonald County, Illinois, Sept. 1, 1878, and came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Taggart,
to Medora, Warren County, in 1881, and has lived in or near Medora ever since.
He married Margaret J. Lewis Sept. 14, 1898, and they established a home in Medora, where he and his father owned several registered stallions. Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Taggart: Charley Don, Aug. 18, 1899, and George Lewis, July 25, 1901. Charley died in November, 1905. In 1902 they moved to a 200-acre farm two and one-half miles north of Medora where they lived until 1915 when he bought a store in Medora. They built a home in Medora, the home in which they are still living.
Their son George married Amanda Moore in 1921 and moved on the farm where they lived until his death in 1929. Mrs. George Taggart, her four daughters and one son bought a property in Medora where they lived until 1943, when theymoved to Indianola. The children all graduated from Indianola high school. After the death of their son George, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Taggart closed the store and moved back on the farm for a few years, and came back to their home in Medora and rented the farm. Their four granddaughters are now married, and their grandson is in the army. They have nine great-grandchildren, six boys and three girls.
Mrs. J. W. Taggart was born in Lucas county in 1881 but moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles V. Lewis, near Medora in 1885.
Mr. Taggart has worked in the admission department at the Iowa State fair since 1924. Both are Republicans and have been active in county and township politics. Mrs. Taggart was Squaw township committeewoman for several years. She is country correspondent for The Record-Herald and Indianola Tribune, and has been writing for them for 54 years. She has been active in Farm Bureau work and was voting delegate for several years. She also is active in Meth- odist church work, has been lay delegate to the conference for several years, and is teacher of the adult class in Sunday school. She was superintendent in the church at Medora for several years, and has held many other church offices.
Mr. and Mrs. Taggart's grandchildren are: Mrs. Earl Lawrence, Kendallville, Ind.; Mrs. Charles Griffin and Mrs. Merril Thompson, Indianola; Mrs. Ted Browning, Davenport; and Gl end ell Lewis Taggart, in the army. Their great-grandchildren are Vicki Sue and Stephen Lynn Lawrence, Roland Lewis and Janet Ann Griffin, Stanley Ray, Galen Lee and George Lewis Thompson and Larry Dean and Linda Kay Browning.[John William Taggart died June 4, 1955 and is buried in the Indianola IOOF Cemetery.]
