HELEN JOY SIMPSON
Helen C. (Joy) Simpson, 2016 High View drive, Des Moines, is a homemaker and substitute teacher. She was born in Indianola Nov. 4, 1898, the daughter of Grant W. and Margaret E. (Cochran) Joy. In 1916 she graduated from Indianola high school, and May 14, 1919, was married to James William Simpson. His parents are Augustus Warren and Lonie E. Simpson, both deceased, who had lived near Norwalk since 1904. James William Simpson was born in Georgetown, Pa., Sept. 9, 1897.
Their children are: Maurine (Porter), born May 31, 1920; Capt. Grant W., born Jan. 21, 1923; Capt. Warren L., born Jan. 27, 1924; Kermit A., born June 10, 1925; Joyann (Strain), born Aug. 2, 1926; and Stanley R., born Nov. 3, 1927. Mr. Simpson and his four sons were all in World War II. James, the father, was with the Seabees carpenter's first mate; Capt. Grant W. is a jet flyer, missing in action in Korea since Jan. 21, 1951; Capt. Warren L. was a combat cargo flyer in Korea now stationed at Randolph field, San Antonio, Texas; Kermit A. was with the military police, Camp Roberts, Calif.; and Stanley R. was stationed at Fort Sheridan, Ill. James, Kermit and Stanley are now out of service.
Mrs. Simpson is the granddaughter of Leonard Joy and Abiah, his wife, with whom she lived while in high school. They lived at 307 East Ashland, Indianola, coming to Warren County in 1876 from Ohio. Mr. Joy was a Civil war veteran. Her maternal grandparents, John and Martha Cochran, came from Canada and Illinois to Iowa in 1876, settling in the White Oak neighborhood, and later moving four miles northeast of Indianola. Mrs. Helen Simpson is affiliated politically with the Republican Party, and is Methodist in faith.
