EMMA REED SEID
Emma Reed Seid, daughter of Phelps and Sallie Lanning Reed, was born near Carlisle Aug. 6, 1861, and has lived in or near Carlisle longer than anyone else. Her father and mother were born in Indiana, coming to the Carlisle neighborhood in 1856. The first winter they lived in the old town of Dudley, moving to the farm one mile east of Carlisle in the spring of 1857.
Mr. Reed was a veteran of the Mexican war, belonging to the 16th Indiana regiment, Company K of the regular army. June 24, 1861, he was commissioned captain of the Three Rivers Guard but resigned later because of sickness. He and his wife were charter members of the Carlisle Christian church.
Emma Reid and John J. Seid were married Dec. 23, 1880. Mr. Seid was born in Maryland, coming to the Avon neighborhood north of Carlisle in 1855. He died in 1939. Their home was always open to the students of Drake university who served as ministers to the Carlisle Christian church. Their only child is Blanche, widow of E. W. Lanning who died in 1923. Mrs. Lanning was born May 31, 1886. She is a graduate of the Carlisle high school, Drake university and taught in the Carlisle schools before her marriage. She is a member of the Christian church, Rebekah lodge and Esther-Ruth club. The family still owns the farm purchased by Phelps Reed and it is operated by Ewing W. Lanning, son of Blanche Seid Lanning and great-grandson of Phelps Reed. Mrs. Emma Seid has been confined to her bed since April 2, 1949, but her mind is alert and she can tell many interesting things about the earlier days in Warren County.
