WILLIAM JENNINGS REED
William Jennings Reed, farmer of Virginia township, was born July 2, 1897, in Clarke County, and came with his parents, Dell and Maud (Fouche) Reed, to Warren County when quite small. His father, twin brother to Dean Reed, was a son of G. K. and Mary Reed, pioneer settlers of Virginia township. William Jennings Reed received his education in the local schools of Virginia township.
Aug. 27, 1922, he married Lucy Eleanor Bayles, daughter of James and Ida (Hylton) Bales. The Hylton and Bayles families were early pioneer settlers in this township. Mr. and Mrs. Reed have two sons: Kenneth Paul, born Sept. 5, 1925, and Gail Wendell, born Nov. 1, 1932.
Mr. Reed has farmed and raised stock from childhood. He operated the Will E. Sayre estate farm 18 years. Before leasing this farm, he purchased the Grandfather Reed homestead, owned by his uncle, Dean Reed. William Reed is a Democrat in his political convictions, and belongs to the Methodist church. He belongs to the Masonic order and is a member of the Lions club. He has served on the township board of trustees and for the past 33 years he has been one of the election board members of Virginia township.— (A.E.S.) [written by Alden Edward Smalley]
