CARROLL JAMES RICHARDS
C. J. Richards, deputy sheriff of Warren County, was born near Hartford Nov. 6, 1916. He is the son of James Russell and Ermile Esta Maude (James) Richards. His maternal great-grandfather, Henry James, came from Indiana to what is now Warren County in the fall of 1845, and entered land of the United States government two miles southwest of Hartford. Stephan James, son of Henry James, was born in Indiana in 1844, and at the beginning of the Civil war enlisted in the Union army, serving in Company B, 34th Iowa regiment. He served throughout the war, participating in nine major battles. He received his honorable discharge in August, 1865.
C. J. Richards received his formal education in the public schools of Hartford and at Iowa State college at Ames. June 10, 1938, he married Lois Darlene Smith, daughter of John and Lena Smith. Mrs. Richards was born at Carlisle July 30, 1914. John Carroll Richards, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richards, was born June 19, 1940.
During World War II Mr. Richards served in the infantry. He is affiliated with Marble lodge at Carlisle and the Des Moines Consistory. He is a member of the American Legion and the Warren district Boy Scout committee. From 1948 to 1950 he was commander of the American Legion post at Carlisle. From 1943 to 1944 he was a member of the town council at Carlisle. His political ties are with the Republican party. His religious affiliation is with the Presbyterian church. Mr. and Mrs. Richards live at 201 West First avenue, Indianola.
