CHARLES W. PICKARD
Charles W. Pickard, a farmer in Jasper county, moved his family to Indianola in 1909 to provide educational opportunities for his children. He purchased the McGranahan property at 410 East Fourth avenue, which remained the parental home until Mrs. Pickard's death in 1950. Mr. Pickard purchased and operated a farm for a time in Liberty township. He later acquired land in Squaw, Jackson and East Lincoln townships.
The children entered the public schools of Indianola and later attended Simpson college, Iowa State college and the State University of Iowa. Mrs. Pickard, who became active in church and Sunday school work, organized and taught the Pickard Bible class for many years. She lived to the age of 94 and is buried in Indianola cemetery beside her husband, who died in 1932.
The youngest son, Willard, entered the real estate business and has made his home in Cedar Rapids. His wife was Irene Schenken of Keystone. They have one son, Charles. The only daughter, Fannie Pauline, married Manley Sweazey of Webster City. They have three daughters and three grandchildren and have made their home in Seattle, Washington. The second son, Wayne, farmed in Squaw township for many years, married Lora Himstreet of Indianola, later moved to Indianola, then to the Rio Grande valley of Texas. He and his family now have their home in Safford, Ariz. They have two sons, Paul Wayne and Frederick. The eldest, Clarence, married Mildred Mott, formerly of Indianola. They returned to Warren County in 1932 to make their home in East Lincoln township where they now live. They have two sons, Dr. Clarence M. and David Charles, and two grandchildren. Mrs. Mildred Pickard is a teacher in the Indianola public schools. Since 1949 Clarence Pickard has been president of the Warren County chapter of the United World Federalists. He is also a member of the state executive council of the United World Federalists of Iowa.
