HERBERT WILLIAM NUTTING
H. W. Nutting, farmer and stockman of Milo, was born on the David Nutting farm in Otter Township Aug. 24, 1874, the son of William Porter and Catherine (McLennan) Nutting. His grandfather, David Hervey Nutting, migrated from Massachusetts to Ohio, then to Missouri, and settled in Warren County, Iowa, in 1855. H. W. Nutting received his formal education in the public schools of Milo and Ackworth academy.
Oct. 23, 1906, Mr. Nutting married Elizabeth Maria Dennis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Robert Dennis. Mrs. Nutting was born at Columbia Sept. 6, 1875. Mr. and Mrs. Nutting have five children: Evelyn Winona, born Aug. 20, 1907; Herbert Dennis, born Oct. 26, 1909; Mable Elizabeth, born Aug. 21, 1911; Kenneth William, born Feb. 28, 1915; Eldon Ansel, born Aug. 25, 1917.
Mr. Nutting lived on the old home place south of Milo 30 years. For a year and a half he lived in Belmont Township. In 1908 he bought a farm on which he lived 38 years. The last six years Mr. and Mrs. Nutting have lived in Milo. For six years Mr. Nutting was a member of the Warren County board of supervisors. He was chairman of the board at the time the government grant was secured for the present courthouse. Mr. Nutting served as township trustee, township clerk and has held all the offices in his rural school district. He was a charter member of the Presbyterian Church, and while a member of that church he served as Sunday school superintendent 10 years. He is at present a member of the Methodist church, and has taught the adult Sunday school class in that church 20 years. He is also trustee of the church. His political ties are with the Republican party.
