GEORGE HENRY MARTENS
George H. Martens, farmer of Jefferson Township, was born near the present town of Martensdale, which had not then been platted, April 12, 1896, the son of John F. and Barbara M. Martens. May 14, 1919, he married Pearl Ivy Anderson, daughter of Carl O. and Sophia L. Anderson, Mrs. Martens was born Dec. 7, 1897 at Andover, Illinois. Their children are Gerl ald O., born Jan. 19, 1921; Joyce M., born July 8, 1922; Philip R., born Aug. 16, 1923; Janette L., born Nov. 6, 1927; Mirney E., born June 25, 1929.
The entire Martens family has been active in the affairs of the Lutheran Church in the community. They have been members of the Warren County Farm Bureau more than a quarter of a century, and all members of the family have taken part in its activities and especially in 4-H work. Mr. Martens was overseas in service six months in World War I. He was a member of the Martensdale school board 12 years and served on the Boy Scout troop committee of Troop 103 at Martensdale. He is a member of the county committee on the Hoover wheat program.
Gerald Martens married Maxine Jensen of Waterloo. They have four children and live in Joliet, Ill., where Gerald is boys' secretary of the Y.M.C.A. Joyce married the Rev. Vernon L. Strempke of Waterloo. They are living in Munich, Germany, doing rehabilitation work. Philip married Martha Knoll of Dallas Center. They have one child. He is farming with his father. Janette married 1st Lt. Delford J. Kalal of Waverly, a chaplain in the U. S. air corps. Mirney married Albert Wagner of Turtle Lake, N. D., who is studying for the ministry at the seminary in Dubuque. Politically Mr. Martens is a Republican and religiously a Lutheran.
