CARL FREDERICK MARTENS
C. F. Martens, retired merchant at Martensdale, was born at Lothrop Dec. 30, 1883. He is the son of John F. and Barbara May Martens. His father was born in Will County, Illinois, May 1, 1860. His mother was born in Germany, but came to Madison County, Iowa, when she was 6 years old. His grandfather, Frederick Martens, was born in Holstein and served as a soldier in the war with Denmark. Frederick Martens came to the United States in 1854. He spent a few years in Will county, Ill., where he worked on the railroad, and came to Warren County, Iowa, in 1861.
Feb. 17, 1909, C. F. Martens married Lettie Jane White, daughter of Jonathan and Esther White. Mrs. Martens was born at Thornburg March 12, 1886. Three children born to Mr. and Mrs. Martens are: Fern B., July 13, 1912; Paul W., Sept. 22, 1915; Roy E., Sept. 3, 1918, who passed away July 4, 1949. The Martens worship in the faith of the Lutheran church. Mr. Martens is a Republican in politics. Fraternally he is affiliated with the Modern Woodmen of America.
