KIMER, LEWIS, farmer, and engineer, Jackson Township, Sec. 8; P. O. St. Charles; was born in Wayne county, Iowa, May 11, 1836; when seventeen years of age, he, with his parents removed to Jefferson county, remaining there one year, they moved to Madison county, and five years after settled in this county; having a natural mechanical skill, at the age of eighteen concluded to become a machinest, and followed the occupation of an engineer until August 13, 1862, when he enlisted as a drummer, in the Twenty-third Iowa Infantry, serving in that capacity until the capture of Vicksburg, when, for bravery and meritorious conduct, he was promoted to commissary of the regiment, and was mustered out at Davenport, August 12, 1865; returning home he resumed his former occupation as farmer and engineer, which he still follows; Mr. Kimer was married December, 1855, to Miss Eliza Hood, of Madison county, a native of England; by this union he has one son, Granville Fremont; Mrs. Kimer died January 29, 1859; Mr. Kimer married Miss Isabella Young, of Madison county; by this union they have three children: Elizabeth S., Grant and William Louis; Mr. Kimer was brought up in the old Democratic school, and was a faithful follower of that doctrine until 1862, when he, like Paul, had his eyes opened, and concluded to go south to dispose of the most obnoxious of that faith; owns a good farm of 100 acres, well improved.

LEWIS SILLIMAN KIMER
Lewis Silliman Kimer, secretary-treasurer The Record and Tribune company, business manager The Record-Herald and Indianola Tribune, born Indianola, April 19, 1917, son of Grant L. and Effie (Silliman) Kimer. Graduate Indianola High School 1935, Simpson College, bachelor of science in business administration, 1939. On June 7, 1941, he married Maxine Keyes (born Eldon, Mo.), daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Stanley J. Keyes of Adel, Iowa. Children Thomas Lee, born Dec. 17, 1945; James Lewis, born June 27, 1949.
Mr. Kimer became associated with The Record and Tribune company in 1938 as director of city circulation while still a student in Simpson College. Upon graduation he entered upon full-time employment as photographer and engraver and assistant to the publisher, became advertising manager in 1944 and business man ager in 1948. Upon incorporation of the business in 1949 was elected secretary-treasurer. Has been active in civic affairs, several terms member board of directors of Indianola Chamber of Commerce; past president Lions club; official board Methodist Church, Member Alpha Tau Omega; Warren Lodge A.F. & A.M.; Indianola Lions club; Methodist; Republican.
