LEWIS JOHNSON
Lewis Johnson, farmer and former sheriff of Warren County, was born near Norwalk Nov. 24, 1897, the son of Henry
'and Eliza (Allen) Johnson. He is the descendant of an early pioneer family of Warren County. His grandfather, Lewis Johnson, a native of Ohio, came from Indiana to what is now Warren County when settlement of this area was just beginning. It was at that time that his father, Henry Johnson, was born in what is now Jefferson township June 20, 1847.
Lewis Johnson married Fern Keeling (deceased), daughter of Charles F. and Clara Keeling. Children born to this marriage are: Ruth Janice, now Mrs. F. O. Jolly Jr., born March 3, 1922; Jeanne Elaine, now Mrs. Duane Woodruff, born May 7, 1925; Merrill Duane, born Feb. 5, 1934.
On May 11, 1946, Lewis Johnson married Wanda Jean Butler, daughter of Kenneth and Flossie Butler. Mrs. Johnson was born at Des Moines Sept. 9, 1924. Rita Jane, child of this marriage, was born March 24, 1949. Mr. Johnson was sheriff of Warren County from Jan. 1, 1937, to Jan. 1, 1951. It is the longest term served by a sheriff in the history of the county. When he retired, he was not a candidate for reelection. In 1949 Mr. Johnson served as general chairman of the Warren County Centennial celebration. During and after World War II he was chairman of the county war bond drives. He has also served as secretary of the Warren County fair. Mr. Johnson owns a 324-acre farm in White Oak township. His political affiliation is with the Republican Party. His religious affiliation is with the Methodist church. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson live at 717 West Third avenue, Indianola.
