WILLIAM HARPER HOYMAN
W. H. Hoyman, superintendent of Indianola public schools from 1926 to 1951 holds the record for length of service in that position. He was born at Clarence Nov. 27, 1883, the son of Henry S. and Mary (Maley) Hoyman. He attended Monmouth college and Iowa State Teachers college where he graduated in 1909 with the degree of bachelor of arts. He continued his studies and received the degree of master of arts from the State University of Iowa.
Mr. Hoyman served his entire professional life as a superintendent. Before coming to Indianola he served the following schools, all in Iowa: Clarksville, 1909-1911; Exira, 1911-1916; Toledo, 1916-1920. Since retiring from active school work he has been in the insurance business. If he had his life to live over again, he says he would follow the same calling of education.
Aug. 12, 1913, Mr. Hoyman married Deana S. Merrick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Merrick. Mrs. Hoyman was born at Marble Rock Sept. 22, 1888. Mr. and Mrs. Hoyman have four children: Kathryn (Schooley), born in 1914; Merrick, born in 1916; Robert, born in 1924; James, born in 1926.
Mr. Hoyman has been active in many community organizations and affairs. During World War II he was chairman of the Warren County chapter of the American National Red Cross. He is a member of the Masonic lodge, the Walt Whitman club of Iowa, and Phi Delta Kappa, an educational fraternity. Mr. and Mrs. Hoyman worship in the faith of the Methodist Church. Politically he describes himself as "Republican Independent." Mr. and Mrs. Hoyman live at 1007 North Buxton, Indianola.
