CHARLES B. HOWELL
C. B. Howell, farmer of Virginia township, was born on a farm in Clarke county, the son of Albert E. and Amelia (Hilliard) Howell. C. B. Howell was educated in the old Irish Grove (No. 9) school of Virginia township.
Nov. 26, 1923, Mr. Howell married Minnie Friesen, who is a graduate nurse of the J. D. Shively Nursing hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Howell are parents of four children: Mildred, now Mrs. S a I m e r Wicks, who resides in Minnesota; Kermit, who married Mrs. Maxine Hanley; Charles Jr., who married Ruth Reynolds; Laren, who lives at home.
Mr. Howell, a schoolmaster at one time, can tell about Chicago, Ill., when it was only a small city on Lake Michigan.
Mr. Howell has given much to his community: 18 years on the school board; 10 years as township trustee; four years as assessor; and is now on the Warren County board of assessment and review for a four-year term.
The Howells have a beautiful modern home in Virginia township and also have a 240-acre farm in Ohio township in Madison county. Mr. Howell is a lover of fine stock and now has on hand a fine herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle. When the rural telephone came, Mr. Howell was on the first organized line in the county, and he was a partner with Emmet Thomas when the tractor first came into use as power.—(A.E.S.)[wirtten by Alden Edward Smalley] [1900 Federal Census shows Charles Howell age 16, born Jan 1884, Iowa living with his parents, Albert & Amelia Howell in Virginia Township, Warren County, Iowa, Social Security Death Index lists Charles Howell born Jan 18, 1883, died Nov 1965]
