MARTIN L. HOOPER
M. L. Hooper, M.D., was born on his father's farm near Palmyra May 11, 1868, son of John and Maria (Switzer) Hooper. Dr. Hooper gained his preliminary education at the Ackworth academy of his native county, and continued his studies at the Keokuk Medical school and the medical school of the University of Illinois. He began the practice of medicine at Milo in 1891, taking over the practice of a brother. His first wife was Blanche Guy, who died in 1893.
Aug 14, 1894, Dr. Hooper married Waita May Rodgers, who was born on a farm southeast of Ackworth Aug. 12, 1876, daughter of Andrew Jay and Mary Isabel Rodgers. In 1904 Dr. Hooper entered the practice of medicine at Indianola. In May, 1918, he joined the colors and was assigned to the army medical corps. He was sent to Vancouver, Washington, for special training, and had received his overseas orders at the time the armistice was signed.
After the close of the war, Dr. Hooper continued the practice of medicine at Indianola where he died Jan. 7, 1929. Dr. Hooper was a member and served as president of the Warren County Medical association. He was also a member of the Iowa State Medical society and the American Medical association. From 1911 to 1914 he served as coroner of Warren County. He was for a number of years a member of the Indianola city council. His political allegiance was given to the Republican Party, and he was affiliated with the Masonic fraternity and the Odd Fellows. Mrs. Hooper lives at 3031/4 West Salem, Indianola.
