JOHN LINNAEUS HILLMAN
Dr. John L. Hillman, for 17 years president of Simpson College, was born in Licking County, Ohio, July 8, 1865, the son of Thomas Baker and Phebe Ann (Green) Hillman. John L. Hillman received the degree of bachelor of arts from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1886; the degree of bachelor of systematic theology from the Boston University school of theology in 1889. Several colleges, including Baldwin-Wallace, Ohio Wesleyan, College of Puget Sound and Simpson College, have conferred upon him honorary degrees.
Aug. 27, 1889, John L. Hillman married Elizabeth Lowe Howes, daughter of Joseph and Abbie (Hedge) Howes. Mrs. Hillman was born at East Dennis, Massachusetts, Feb. 9, 1865. Children born to Dr. and Mrs. Hillman are Paul Mansell, born May 27, 1890; Gertrude (Lavely), born Sept. 12, 1891; Alice Mary (Sanders), born Sept. 15, 1894; Helen Frances, (Fischer), born March 4, 1898; John Wesley, born May 21, 1904.
Dr. Hillman was president of Simpson College from September, 1919, to March, 1936 - the longest tenure of office for any president of Simpson. The events of Dr. Hillman's term as president of Simpson are quite fully set down in the history of the college, beginning on page 171. He is a minister of the Methodist Church, and served as pastor of Methodist churches in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Des Moines, Iowa. Fraternally he is affiliated with the Masonic order.
