RAYMOND MURRAY FELTON
Raymond Murray Felton, farmer, was born at New Virginia April 11, 1906. He is the son of Carl C. and Ella Felton. April 23, 1942, he married Lucy Evelyn Wickett, daughter of Walter R. and Margaret Ann Wickett. Mrs. Felton was born at New Virginia Jan. 5, 1908. The Feltons have three children: Larry Ernest, born July 19, 1946; David Maurice, born July 24, 1947; Kathy Ann, born June 22, 1948.
During World War II Mr. Felton enlisted in the naval construction battalion (Seabees) in September, 1942. He served 16 months in Alaska in 45th battalion, and was then transferred to the 133rd battalion in Hawaii. Later he was attached to the 4th Marine division as shore party for the invasion of Iwo Jima. The force invaded Iwo Jima at 9 a.m. on D day, Feb. 19, 1945. The 4th Marine division was assigned the task of cutting across the narrow tip of the island. Mr. Felton witnessed the famous flag raising on Mt. Suribachi. Organized resistance ended March 16. In the invasion of Iwo Jima the Americans lost 4,189 officers and men killed, 441 were missing, and 15,308 were wounded. Mr. Felton was honorably discharged November, 1945.
Mr. Felton is a member of the American Legion Virginia Post No. 281, and the Neophyte Lodge No. 301, A.F. & A.M. Mrs. Felton belongs to the Neophyte Chapter No. 206, Order of Eastern Star. The Feltons are Republicans and Methodists. Address: New Virginia, Iowa.
