Dear Bill Hansen --

You cannot imagine how helpful your information on Coppel/Bradley is to me. You have solved a mystery that has been misreported in my family for over one hundred years. Of course, as it always the case with genealogy, now new mysteries arise.

The story in my family was that Etta Mae Bradley married Coppel (now Ulysses Grant Coppel) but ran away a year later to Washington State with Robert Brown. To read in your post that Brown and Etta Mae were married a year later in Ottumwa is very surprising. Now the mystery turns to Etta Mae's parents _______ Bradley and Mary Elizabeth (?) Bradley. Etta left her infant daughter (Minnie) to be raised by them. I haven't been able to find record of them or their family in the Ottumwa records at my disposal. The Ella Bradley you report was Etta's sister, but no mention of brothers Grant, George W. or John S.

Again, thank you so much for your help.

Scott Stevens (great grandson of Etta Mae Bradley)

There is nothing in the Wapello records related to a George F. Coppell.
However, there is the following:

Wapello County marriage records:

1) Ulysses Grant Copple married Etta Mae Bradley on 20 Feb 1887
2) Grant Copple married Clara Weider on 18 Dec 1888
3) Grant Copple married Juda Anna (Hobbs) Bean (unknown date)
4) Etta Mae Bradley married D. Mack Robert Brown on 18 Jan 1888.
5) Ella Bradley married W.F. Musselman on 3 July 1883

Wapello County WPA records show:

Ulysses Grant Copple died 3 Aug 1936, aged 70
Juda A. Copple died 10 Oct 1936, aged 74
both are buried in Shaul Cemetery.

Obituary of Ulysses "Grant" Coppel from Ottumwa Courier dated 4 Aug 1936
indicates.

He was born 10 July 1866 in Eddyville, Iowa son of William and Eva Copple
Current wife Anna who was formerly married to Edwin Bean survives.
First wife was Clara died previously (no date)
No any mention of a wife Etta

Children:

Pearl Madge Copple wife of Ray Collett of Blakesburg
W.F. Copple of Sheridan, Wyoming
James E. Copple of Ottumwa
Step-sons, James and Frank Bean of Ottumwa

Siblings:

Sisters: Mrs Fred Bradshaw of Farson, Iowa; Mrs. John Kennedy of Gwen, Iowa;
Mrs. Ralph Gott of Centerville, Iowa.

Brothers: W.F Copple of Ottumwa

A sister, Mrs. Clay Jones preceded him in death.

Hope this is of some help and does not create too much confusion.
