Frederick,
I think you'll have a very interesting story here, if you ever get it all put together.
According to Wapello County marriage records Bernard Keegan married Elizabeth Bowes on 2 Jul 1876. As you will see later, this must have been your ggrandmother. They probably should appear in the 1880 Wapello County census, but don't. At least not that I can find. Elizabeth apparently died prior to 1896. I can find no burial record in Wapello County's WPA records, but that doesn't mean she isn't buried here.
On 3 Nov 1896, Bernard married Ellen A. Sexton in Wapello County. She is the eldest daughter of Patrick and Ellen Sexton. I cannot find Bernard in the 1900 census of Iowa. As was previously indicated there is a Bernard Keegan in Henry county, but that is not your Bernard Keegan. He could, however, be your Bernard Keegan's father.
In 1910, Bernard and Ellen are living in Van Buren Township, Van Buren County, Iowa. They have no children living with them and the census indicates that no children were born of this marriage. In fact Ellen indicates that she has never had any children. Bernard indicates that he is 45, was born in Iowa and that his parents were born in Ireland. Ellen indicates that she is 44, was born in New York and her parents in Ireland.
In 1920, Bernard and Ellen are living at 122 E. Woodland in Ottumwa, Wapello County. I think there is a mistake in the census in that it lists Bernard as being born in New York and Ellen as being born in Iowa.
In 1930, Bernard and Ellen are once again living in Van Buren Township, Van Buren County, Iowa. Bernard is listed as being born in Iowa and Ellen in New York. He was then 65 and I would guess that is probably where he died.
