In Response To: Re: Marriage ?? (Pat Sincox)

Thank you Pat & Bill for the data! Larry Warren also responded directly to me via E-mail providing similar information (so thank you, also Larry, for the significant information you sent).

Indeed, Louis(Lewis) Hooyer & Josephine(Gertrude) are my great-grandparents -- the spelling of Lewis's name varies on different documents but the general stats are consistent. As to Josephine, perhaps Gertrude was her middle name & she preferred to be known as such; they were married in Keokuk, Lee County & resided with her parents. The couple lost four children to Scarlet fever in 1880 & one in 1875, yet, per your info they do not appear to be buried in their plot.

I have posted queries on various GenForum sites under the name of: RENO, IOWA (state of), PARKER & HOWELlS because I am trying to varify if Mable had children with Guy Parker, whom she married in 1902, Wapello Co. (my father, Mable's son by her marriage to Dan C. Sullivan, said that he had a half-sibling or maybe two, but did not elaborate further). The 1910 Census records list "Mabel C" Parker (correct spelling of her name is "Mable") & Guy Parker residing with two children: Margaret W Parker age 7, & Edward L Parker age 2;

The 1915 Census perplexes me (received from another source): Guy Parker is listed as divorced & living with his mother (114 Highland St) with Margaret (12) & Edward (7) in residence; however, M & E are also listed as living at 324 N Nash, with Mable 33, et.al (no mention of divorce) - However, Mable marries Dan C. Sullivan (my grandfather) on May 29, 1915.

In 1920 census Margaret/Edward are living with Guy Parker at his mother's house again; Mable is living with Dan C Sullivan & their son Dan W (my dad - known as "BIllY" & later officially changed to William; he was born in 1917, however, Wapello Co. had his birth recorded as 1912; he corrected the info. abt. 20 yrs ago)(note: Mable's name is still spelled incorrectly); then in the 1925 census Guy & Edward are still living at G's mother's house, with Edward's mother listed as "Mabel Hooser"; Margaret was not mentioned in this census -- but I subsequently found out that Margaret died in 1923, was married to Orville Howells & had 2 sons: Edgar & William. In 1930, Guy & Edward have moved on, but to where,I do not know.

A 2nd cousin looked at the 1930 census & found out that Dan C. Sullivan was living in Galesburg, IL & that Mable was in Ottumwa married to a Fred Drake! (with a Billie Sullivan listed as a "grandson"! Fred died in 1931.

Now, Mable died in 1938 in Galesburg, Il, & was buried in East Linfield Ceme. -- headstone reads: "Mable Sullivan, Wife of Dan C. Sullivan" (Dan died in 1954 & was buried right by Mable) --

The information I'd like to now retrieve is:
a)Official Verification that Marg. & Ed are Mable's children; b) When did Mable get divorced from Guy Parker; c) what happend to Edward?; d)what happened to Margaret's children; e) is there an official record of Dan & Mable divorcing before 1930?; f) was Mable legally married to Fred Drake? and g) if they were legally wed, did Mable actually remarry Dan C after Drake's death? (Indeed, I've just written a soap opera!)

Clearly, you must grasp why I need some assistance (if I lived close enough to Ottumwa, I'd research the records onsite - but, alas, I live in Tacoma, WA & it would not be practical for me to visit at this time).

So thank you in advance for your assistance. And I'd like to note, however, that as disrupted as my father's youth could be, his aunts & uncles (on both sides) doted on him -- also, he became an outstanding man (he passed away in 2006 at 89); he had been a decorated paratrooper in WWII; a beloved educator in the community, & most of all, a wonderful husband, father & papa. I miss him dearly, but working on this project keeps him very close each day (A cousin on his paternal side has the Sullivan line down well)

Anyway, I will pass your kindness forward!
Take care

Rita Sullivan
