John Henry Carter was born and raised in and around Kent County, Delaware. The town of Whitelesburgh, now known as Whiteleysburg.

John left Delaware in 1835, and took the road for Indiana. He purchased 1200 acres and farmed in the area of Boone Co., IN., near Zionsville.

In 1852, John headed west to Iowa. The location of the homestead being 1 mile West and 3/4 of a mile North of Bladensburg in Pleasant Twp. The land was purchased @ $35 an acre, and in 1852, he purchased 293 acres.

Ten years later, the value of his real estate had increased from $500 to $6000 and his personal property from $300 to $1600.

John Henry made a journey to Calif. in search of gold. Martha before her death maintained John did come home with Gold.

The Fox and Sauk Indians lived just 3/4 of a mile away on Cedar Creek.

John Henry died from pneumonia after returning from Calif. a second time. He was laid to rest in a new suit, kid shoes, white shirt, and gloves at the Bladensburg Cemetery.
