Roy Parker Dies; Prominent In Legion
Roy C. Parker, 57, prominent American Legion leader and junior baseball manager, died at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Joseph hospital following a heart attack. His home was at 129 North Washington street. The son of John T. and Ella M. Parker, he was born in Blakesburg August 29, 1887 and had been a resident of Ottumwa for the past 12 years. In 1907 Parker enlisted in the Navy and made a world cruise on the battleship Virginia. He was inducted in the Army, May 28, 1918 and was honorably discharged February 25, 1919. Parker was a charter member of the O.B. Nelson post, No. 3, American Legion and served as sergeant at arms for many years. He was a post chaplain for one year and vice commander last year. He has been in charge of the post’s junior ball team for a number of years and recently was appointed first district chairman of junior baseball. He was a member of the Baptist church and the W.O.W. lodge of which he has been serving as council commander. Survivors include his wife, June; two stepsons, Corporal Leroy E. Follett, and Private Harold E Follett, and a sister, Mrs. E.G. Schaefer, Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Johnson funeral chapel, conducted by Chaplain Luther Booth of the Ottumwa Naval Air station. Burial will be in Ottumwa cemetery. The American Legion will conduct military services at the grave.
