Michael Moffit, Veteran Morrell Employee, Succumbs At 78
Michael Moffit, of 1334 North Elm street, 78 years old and an employee of John Morrell & Co. for more than half a century, died at his home at 8:30 a.m. today. Mr. Moffit was born December 23, 1865 in Green Valley, Iowa county, Iowa the son of John and Eliza Moffit. He was married in 1887 to Sylvia Disor and to this union was born one son, Ralph Moffit and one daughter, Mrs. David Pierson of Ottumwa. Mrs. Moffit died November 3, 1899. On October 22, 1903, Mr. Moffit was married to Mary Gertrude Hughes, who survives. Four children were born to this union, three surviving: Lewis Moffit, Dorothy Moffit, and Marjorie Anderson, all of Ottumwa. One child died in infancy. Other survivors are one sister, Mrs. Mary Gow of Oregon; two brothers, George of Ottumwa and Bruce of Adair; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr. Moffit never worked for any firm other than John Morrell & Co., entering the employ of the local plant soon after he came to Ottumwa at the age of 21 years. He worked in the box sawmill, export packing, smoked meat roustabout, and construction department, serving two years as Forman. The last 10 years of his 53 years of employment with the company were spent in charge of the information desk in the general office building lobby. He was also a charter member of the East End Presbyterian church and served as an elder almost, obit cut off here … him a lifetime membership on its board of elders at the congregational meeting in April of this year. He also held a life membership in the Elks lodge and was a member of the Ottumwa lodge No. 16 A.F. & A.M. The body is at the Lester Jay funeral home awaiting completion of funeral arrangements.
Funeral services for Michael Moffit, who died Tuesday morning, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday from the East End Presbyterian church in charge of the Rev. Edward D. Byrd assisted by the Rev. W.J. Creswell. Burial will be in Ottumwa cemetery with Masonic services at the grave. The body will be taken to the church at 2 p.m. Thursday, and the casket will be closed at the opening of the service. Honorary pallbearers will be E.V. Heap, Lyle Mosher, Clarence Nelson, James Miley, W.R. Tozer, Ray Howell and Ray McCreary. The active pallbearers are to be Paul Boyd, C.D. Wilson, David Pierce, Ben Lewis, Centry King and Cash Eddy.
