Max Clifford Rupe, 9, of Newton street, was drowned Saturday afternoon while wading in a pond in Central addition, just west of South Wapello street. The pond in which death occurred was made deep this spring by flood waters after the levee nearby was blasted to keep the flood out of Ottumwa’s business area. The lad is said to have been walking in about two feet of water when he suddenly stepped in a deep hole. It was about an hour before divers could recover the body, and efforts of city firemen, using an inhalator, failed to revive him. He was the son of Thomas Rupe, Ottumwa and Mrs. Bernice McCoy, Ottumwa route 4. Besides the parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred McKim, Ottumwa and Thayer Rupe, Bloomfield; a great grandmother Mrs. C.C. Cackler, Ottumwa route 2, and three half sisters, Ruth Rupe, Patricia Rupe, and Shirley Rupe, all of Ottumwa.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Johnson funeral chapel conducted by the Rev. E.M. Boyer. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery Pallbearers will be Lee Rupe, Joe Doser, Basil Rupe and James Lathrop.
