Mrs. Sarah Catherine (Kate) Toopes, 87, oldest member of the auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars here, died at the home of her son, William Toopes, 1227 Hayne street, at 2:15 p.m. Monday. The daughter of William and Elizabeth Thompson, she was born in Brown county, Ohio, December 3, 1856. She came to Iowa when she was 14 years old, settling near Dean, Iowa. She had lived in Ottumwa the past 26 years. She was a member of the Hilltown Christion church. Preceding her in death were her husband, Leonard in 1927, one son and one daughter. Surviving are two sons, Jasper Toopes and William Toopes, both of Ottumwa and two daughters, Mrs. Tella Queen of Keokuk and Mrs. Lydia Rifenbery of Ottumwa. Twenty-four grandchildren and 41 greatgrandchildren, two great greatgrandchildren and sister Mrs. H.L. Rifenbery of Houston, Texas, also survive.
Funeral services will be held at the Johnson funeral chapel Wednesday at 3 p.m. in charge of the Rev. Captain J.E. LaLone of the Salvation Army, assisted by the Rev. E.M. Boyer. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. The Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary will have its services at the cemetery.
