A.T. Gardner Dies; Funeral Held Today

A.T. Gardner, 85, whose home was at 518 North Green street, died at 5:40 p.m. Saturday at Ottumwa hospital. Funeral services were at 3:30 p.m. today in the First Christian church, the pastor, the Rev. Harold Roberts in charge. Burial was in Memorial Lawn. Mr. Gardner was the son of William T. and Elizabeth Gardner and was born March 3, 1859, in Lima Ohio. He came to Ottumwa in 1888 and was employed in the office of John Morrell & Co. for half a century, retiring five years ago. He began in the Ottumwa office as a stenographer for the late T. D. Foster in 1888. He was soon promoted to the position of stock and cable clerk. In 1891 he was appointed cashier and served in that capacity for four years, when appointed to chief clerk. After 14 years as chief clerk he was returned to the cahier department. In June 1938 he completed 50 years with the company and was retired the following March. Mr. Gardner has been a Mason for more than 50 years, was a member of Ottumwa lodge No. 16. He also was a member and honorary elder of the First Christian church, Ottumwa. On May 22, 1890, near New Sharon, Mr. Gardner married Miss Laura J. Klinker. She and five children survive. They are Mrs. West Bonnifield, St. Louis, Paul K. Gardner, Lovelock, Nevada, Dr. Thomas A. Gardner, Omaha, Dr. Warren H. Gardner, San Mateo, California, and Homer W. Gardner, Des Moines. Also, a sister, Mrs. Martha Hess, Goshen, Indiana, and seven grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers at this afternoon’s funeral service were T.H. foster, George Morrell, W. B. Bonnifield. Active pallbearers were Charles A. Johnson, Lewis Melvin, will Gilbert, David Higbee, Frank Hoswell and E.R. Linder. Masonic services were held at the grave.
