Fremont Man Burned To Death In Garden
Casper Bergen, 78, was found burned to death about 2 p.m. Thursday in his truck garden patch which he had been burning off here. Neighbors seeking to protect their buildings from flames spreading rapidly through dry weeds, found the body. Mr. Bergan’s wife died last May, and he lived alone. He is survived by four sons, George, Eddie and William of Spokane, Washington and Charles Bergen of Great Falls, Montana, six grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Albert Prebe of Edina, Missouri, and Mrs. Lincoln Warner of Cedar. Funeral services will be at the Methodist church at Fremont at 2 p.m. Sunday in charge of the Rev. J.W. Zerbe and the Rev. R.A. Reed. Burial will be at Cedar Township cemetery. Masonic services will be conducted at the grave, Mr. Bergen would have been a member of the Masonic lodge at Fremont for 50 years this summer. The body will remain at the Community funeral parlors in Ottumwa until time for the service. He was a section foreman for the Burlington railroad here many years and has spent his life as a railroader before his retirement several years ago.
