Private James H. Reed, 18, died Thursday in the Lawson general hospital at Atlanta, Georgia, following injuries received earlier in the week when he was struck by an automobile. No details concerning the accident are known here, except the original announcement from Army officers at Atlanta stating that he had sustained head injuries and a broken leg. Private Reed, serving with a medical detachment, was the son of Lt. and Mrs. John D. Reed, Sr. of 319 McPherson avenue. He was a graduate of Ottumwa high school with the 1943 class. His father is serving with the railway battalion at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. His father is known to have started for Atlanta but had not reached there when the death message was received. His mother and two sisters, Gloria and Alicia Reed, were also expected to arrive in Atlanta yesterday morning. He is survived by one other sister, Mrs. Patricia Bowden of 1115 North Wapello street, and one brother, Staff Sergeant John D. Reed Jr. is with the Army Air Force in North Africa. He is also survived by two grandparents Mrs. Ada Petty and Charles H. Reed, both of Muscatine. The body will be returned to Ottumwa for burial though no funeral arrangements have yet been made.
The funeral of Private James H. Reed, who died last Thursday in Lawson General hospital, Atlanta, Georgia, as the result of an automobile accident, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Johnston’s chapel. The Rev. John R. Estes of the First Baptist church will be in charge and burial will be in Ottumwa cemetery. There will be military services and the pallbearers (obit cut off) …months in the guard before entering federal services. He was inducted at Des Moines August 6, 1943 and took his basic training at Camp Barkeley, Texas. In October 1943, he was transferred to Atlanta.
