Staff Sergeant Virgil Leo Henderson, 26, of 1050 South Tuttle street, died at the Percy Jones government hospital at Battle Creek, Michigan, at 12:20 p.m. Friday following an operation. He was the son of Lee and Ollie Henderson and was born in Ottumwa October 18, 1917. Before the war he was a member of troop E, 113th cavalry, Iowa national guard. He re-enlisted in January 1941, as was inducted into active military service at that time. He had been stationed at Camp Hood, Texas. He was a member of the Open Bible church here. Survivors include his wife, Fern; a son, Lee Bryan; his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hartley, Agency; four sisters, Mrs. Thelma Lee, Oskaloosa, Mrs. Grace Woollums, Ottumwa Mrs. Magdalene Bolyard, Rock Island, Illinois and Miss Imogene Henderson, Ottumwa; a brother Private Kenneth D. Henderson, overseas; two half sisters, Dorothy and Parry Hartley, both of Agency; two half brothers Harold and Hartley, both of Agency, and his grandmother Mrs. Hiram Annis, Ottumwa route 6.
Funeral services for Staff Sergeant Virgil Leo Henderson, 1050 South Tuttle street, who died at Percy Jones government hospital. Battle Creek, Michigan at 12:20 p.m. Friday, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the First Church of the Open Bible, the Rev. Trefon Stanton and the Rev. Roscoe Morrison in charge. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Military services will be held at the grave. The body was taken to the residence from Johnson’s chapel Sunday and will be taken to the church at noon Tuesday. Pallbearers will be John Great, Richard Reese, Oscar Covert, Jess Rifenberry, John Eaton and Robert McCall. Sergeant Henderson is survived by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Annis and Mrs. Ollie Stanton, in addition to those previously listed.
