Selma Smith, 16, Fatally Hurt; Was To Sing In Christmas Pageant
Miss Selma Smith, 16, daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. E.C. Smith, Ottumwa route 3 was fatally injured and her sister Doris 15, and brother, Truman 19, were hurt severely about 7 p.m. Tuesday when hit by a car on highway No 63 just north of the city limits of Ottumwa. Selma died at 10:20 a.m. today at the St. Joseph hospital of injuries which included fractures of both legs. The trio was walking south along the pavement, toward the bus line at “dead man’s” curve, when struck by a car driven by Ensign Joe Cavanaugh of the Ottumwa Naval Air station, who also was travelling towards the city. It was the second accident fatality on the north road in less than a week. Selma was born July 17, 1927, at Marengo. She had been a member of the Wesley Methodist church and the church choir. Besides her parents and Doris and Truman, she is survived by three other brothers, LeRoy of Newton, Melvin of Deep River, and Floyd at home, and grandparents, William F. Oakes, Ottumwa route 3, and Mrs. Emma O. Smith, North English. The body was removed to the Carroll Reece funeral home pending completion of funeral arrangements.
Funeral services for Selman Irene Smith, 16 inured fatally in a highway accident Tuesday, will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Wesley Methodist church in charge of the Rev. R. C. Keagy. The girl’s sextet of the Ottumwa high school will sing. Pallbearers will be Robert Brown, Lloyd Stuber, Eugene Nehre, George Alton, Robert Foster and Jack Stabler. Burial will be at Millersburg. The body will be taken from the Carroll Reece funeral home to the church at 12:30 p.m.
