Fremont’s Oldest Citizen Dies Here
Lewis C. Roquet, 97, Fremont, died at the St. Joseph hospital in Ottumwa at 3:20 a.m. today after being a patient there since Wednesday when he fell at the home of his son, Walter Roquet, in Fremont. He broke his hip. He was born July 18, 1846, in Germany. Mr. Roquet had lived with his son the last three years. He was Fremont’s oldest resident and came here from Germany when he was four years old. He lived in a log cabin three quarters of a mile northeast of Freemont for several years. Later he built a new home on the same farm and resided there until March 1918. He moved that year into Freemont. His wife died in 1917 and his daughter, Mrs. A.C. Waltman died three years ago. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Cora Hockett of Enterprise, Oregon, and Mrs. C. O. Robbins of Martinsburg; six sons, H.A. Roquet of Long Beach, California, George R. Roquet of Arlington, Iowa, Earl of Des Moines, C.A. Roquet, Ira C. Roquet and W.A. Roquet all of Fremont; 34 grandchildren and 56 greatgrandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren. The body is at the Community funeral parlors in Ottumwa. He had been a member of the Fremont Christian church for 50 years.
