50-Year Resident Of Community Dies
Henry Downing, 58, a carpenter and a resident of this community for 50 years, died suddenly at 3:45 p.m. Thursday at his home on Ottumwa route 7. He was born in Davis county April 17, 1889 and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic church and of General Shields council, No. 888, Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife, Nora; a son Sergeant Bernard Downing, stationed in England; three brothers Frank Downing, Atchison, Kansas, and James and Ben Downing, both of Ottumwa; a stepbrother, George McGraw, Lincoln, Nebraska, and a sister, Mrs. Eliza Tillotson, Ottumwa. Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Vaughan funeral chapel and a 9 o’clock at St. Mary’s church when the Rt. Rev. Mgr. J.M. Walsh, V.F. will celebrate a requiem high mass. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Members of Knights of Columbus and the church parish will meet at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel to recite the rosary.
