Morrell Sausage Dept. Head Dies
Eldon F. Covert, 38, foreman of the sausage department at the John Morrell & Co. plant here, died at 8:20 a. m. today at his home, 201 Oakwood avenue. He has been in poor health for several months. Born March 29, 1905, at Topeka, Kansas, he was the son of Jesse and Nellie Covert. He was employed by the Morrell company’s Topeka plant in 1935 and was head of the sausage department there from 1935 until coming to Ottumwa in April of 1942. He was a member of the First Methodist church, B.P.O.E. No. 347, Topeka lodge No. 17, A.F.& A.M. , and the Foreman’s club at Morrell’s. He attended Kansas State College and was a member of Phi Lambda Theta fraternity. Survivors include his wife, Laura; three daughters, Nancy Jean, Carolyn, and Kathleen, all at home, a brother, Lester E. Covert, Ottumwa and a sister, Mrs. Carol Smith, Lakeland, Florida. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Lester Jay funeral home in charge of the Rev. H.A. Deck D.D. pastor of the First Methodist church. The body will be sent to Topeka at 5 p.m. Thursday for burial.
