James M. Reed Is Called Suddenly
James M. Reed, 79, of 316 McPherson street, died at 9:15 p.m. Thursday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Deitch of Kirkville. He had been ill for only a few hours. Mr. Reed went to Kirkville Wednesday to attend the funeral services for Mrs. T.J. Hardesty and remained overnight in his daughters’ home. He became ill at noon Thursday and steadily grew worse. He was born April 17, 1864 near New Philadelphia, Ohio, the son of John and Henrietta Reed. With his parents he moved to Iowa in 1865, later going to Kansas where he spent a few years before returning to Iowa, where he had since lived in Kirkville and Ottumwa. He was married September 18, 1889 to Alice M. Hulinger at Lincoln, Nebraska. She died October 31, 1941. He is survived by two sons and one daughter; Mrs. Deitch, Kirkville, Clarence Reed, Ottumwa and Lawrence Reed, Seattle, Washington. He is also survived by one brother, J. Frank Reed of Ottumwa and the following grandchildren; Harold, Frances and Jimmie Reed, Ottumwa; Mrs. Paul Blake, California, Joan Reed, Seattle; Lt. Charles L. Deitch in the Army, and Patricia Deitch, Kirkville. Three great grandchildren also survive. The body is at the Community funeral home pending the completion of funeral arrangements.
Funeral services for James M. Reed, who died suddenly Thursday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Deitch of Kirkville, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Kirkville Methodist church. The Rev. C.S. Dewey will be in charge of the services and burial will be in the West View cemetery. The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday form the Community funeral parlors here.
