Mrs. Fred Orvis Dies At 2 Today
Mrs. Fred Orvis, 75, wife of a retired Milwaukee railroad engineer, died at 2 p.m. today at the St. Joseph hospital after a lingering illness. Her home was at 115 North Clay street. She was a resident of Ottumwa for many years and an active worker in St. Mary’s church groups. Survivors include a daughter Miss Genevieve Orvis, Ottumwa and a son Alvah Orvis, Des Moines. Mrs. Fred. E. Orvis who died at St. Joseph hospital, will be held Friday morning, at 8:30 from the Orvis home at 115 North Clay street, and at 9 o’clock from St. Mary’s Catholic church. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. J.M. Walsh V.F. will be the celebrant of a requiem high mass and burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Mrs. Orvis was born February 14, 1863, in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin the daughter of Dennis and Jane Creehan. She was married on June 15, 1886, to Fred Orvis and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary of June 15, 1936. She was preceded in death by two infant sons. She is survived by one daughter Miss Genevieve Orvis, Ottumwa and son, Alva Orvis of Des Moines. She was a member of St. Mary’s church Altar and Rosary society, Catholic Daughters of America, St. Joseph hospital guild, Milwaukee Women’s club, the G.I.A. to the B. of L.E. and was a part president of the American Legion auxiliary. Member of General Shields Knights of Columbus, No. 888 the Catholic Daughters of America and St. Mary’s school guild will meet with the members of St. Mary’s parish at 8 o’clock this evening in the Orvis home to recite the rosary.
