Navy Plane Crash Kills Iowa Youth
Dayle B. Klett, 19, a son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Klett, Everly, Iowa was killed Friday when a Navy training plane, from the U.S. Naval Air Station at Ottumwa, crashed northeast of Blakesburg. The accident happened on a routine V-hop in which Klett was a passenger in a plane piloted by Aviation Cadet Stanley Novac, Columbus, Ohio, Novac parachuted to safety and suffered only slight injuries. Klett was a freshman at Iowa State College before entering the service, where he played on the Cyclone baseball team as an outfielder. As an athlete he was honorable mention on the all State prep baseball team a few years ago, when a member of the Everly high school quintet and was an outstanding high school baseball player. He reported here August 11 with the first group of “tarmac” aviation students in the primary phases of cadet training. The body is at the Carroll Reece funeral home.
