Death came Sunday in a California air crash to David William Crable, 21, above, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Crable of 223 Frietag avenue. David, who enlisted on March 22, 1942, was an aviation machinist mate third class in the Navy and was in flight service on the west coast. His station was Alameda, California. Details of the death were not given in the telegram arriving early today from his commanding officer. The body under naval escort, will be returned from Oakland. Today’s news brings to approximately 20 the number of war casualties to date from the Ottumwa vicinity. Many are known to have been killed, others are missing with their exact status unknown, and still others are prisoners of war. David Crable was home just a few weeks ago, arriving April 26 and spending 10 days here with his parents, his sister, Phyllis Mae and brother, Eugene Martin. He was born in Ottumwa, June 30, 1921, attended Franklin school through the eighth grade and then Ottumwa high school where he was graduated with the class of 1940. During his high school days, he was on the football squad (obit cut off at this point)
Funeral services for David William Crable son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Crable, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Crable of 223 Frietag avenue, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday from the East End Presbyterian church in charge of the Rev. George Hubbard. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn cemetery. Crable an aviation machinist’s mate third class, was killed in the crash of a Navy bombing plane and while on an operation flight from his station at Alameda, California. The body arrived early today and was taken to the Johnson funeral home where it will remain until the time of the service. Pallbearers and a trumpeter selected from the personnel at the Naval Air station here will represent the Navy.
