Unusual Illness Fatal To Boy, 12
Twelve-year-old Jerry Shields Bailey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth (Duker) Bailey of 1120 East Mary street, died at his home at 12:10 a.m. today following an illness of 28 hours. Death is believed to have resulted from a form of sleeping sickness, but doctors said it is not considered contagious. The lad was a member of the seventh grade at Agassiz school, and was active in athletics. He also was a member of Boy Scout troop No. 2. His father, a former constable in Center Township here, has been employed at the Kaiser shipyards at Oakland, California, since last November. He is en route home. Besides the parents, the youth is survived by grandparents, Mrs. Ida Shields, Ottumwa, and Mrs. Bailey, Drakesville; a great grandmother, Mrs. Anna Rogers Pulaski; two aunts, Mrs. Bertha Howe, Oakland, California, and Mrs. Flora Peterson, Long Island, New York, and an uncle, Harold Shields, Davenport.
Funeral services of Jerry Shields Bailey, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth (Duker) Bailey, who died early Friday at the residence, 1120 East Mary street, will be held at the Johnson funeral chapel at 4 p.m. Monday, conducted by the Rev. E.L. Frost of the Davis Street Christian church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn cemetery. The casket will be taken to the home at 9:30 a.m. Sunday and will be returned to the chapel at 1 p.m. Monday. Pallbearers will be Jack Guest, Dick Guest, Robert Harrington, Bill Osteen, Gary Simpson and LeRoy Waddle.
