Dr. Evon Walker Dies Early Today
Dr. Evon Russell Walker, 66, above, a practicing physician here for the past 20 years, died suddenly at 7:30 a.m. today at his home, 401 East Maple avenue. Dr. Walker had supposedly been in excellent health and his death came without warning. He came to Ottumwa from Sedalia, Missouri where he had practiced medicine since his graduation from school. He was graduated from Ottumwa high school, Iowa State college at Ames, the medical school at the University of Iowa and the Robert Burns hospital at Iowa City. Dr. Walker was a member of the local Elks lodge, the Ottumwa Kiwanis club and the Wapello County Medical society, which he served officially as secretary, treasurer and president. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Shrine temple at Davenport. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias. He was a director of the Farmer & Merchants bank. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Leota Walker, and two half-sisters; Mrs. Joe Bensmiller, Eugene, Washington and Mrs. Ina Hamlin of Montebello, California. He is also survived by a double cousin, Foss Walker of Fairfield, and a cousin Mrs. Perry Kramer of Sigourney. The body is at the Johnson funeral home pending the completion of funeral arrangements.
Funeral services for Dr. Evon R. Walker of 401 East Maple avenue, prominent Ottumwa physician who died at his home, at 7:30 a.m. Monday will be held at the First Christian church Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Harold Roberts, pastor assisted by the Rev. J. R. Estes, pastor of the First Baptist church. Burial will be in the Ottumwa cemetery. The casket was taken from the Johnson funeral chapel to the residence today where it will remain until 11 a.m. Wednesday. It then will be taken to the church and closed at the beginning of the service.
Honorary pallbearers; Dr. E. G. Barton, Dr. Glenn Blome, Dr. E. B. Howell, Dr. W.E. Anthon; Dr. G. R. Johnson, Early Mowery, Harry Sutton and T.J. Neiswanger. Active pallbearers; Will Lowry, Everett J. Mosier, Earl Wimmer, Leighton Smith, Irwin Vaughn and James Hart.
