J. N. Brown, Veteran Of Railroad, Dies
J.N. Brown, 77, who retired as a Milwaukee railroad conductor in 1937, with a 50-year service record, died at 7 a.m. today at his home, 801 West Third street. Mr. Brown was born May 5, 1865 and entered the employ of the Milwaukee December 5, 1887. He was promoted to conductor September 17, 1891, retiring June 20, 1937. He spent the past 10 years of his service on the passenger trains. Milwaukee employees said today that he was one of the most popular employees on the division. He is survived by his wife; one son Joseph Brown of Springfield, and two grandchildren, Suzanne and Mary Jane; and one sister, Mrs. Ella Carroll, of Knoxville, two children preceded him in death. Mrs. Brown was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic church and the Holy Names society; and of General Shields council, No. 888, Knights of Columbus. The body was taken to the Traul funeral chapel where it will remain pending funeral arrangements.
Funeral services for J.N. Brown veteran Milwaukee conductor who died early Thursday at the age of 77, will be held Saturday morning at the home, 801 East Third Street, at 8:30 and at St. Mary’s Catholic church at 9 o’clock, with a requiem mass celebrated by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. J.M. Walsh, V.F. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. The body was to be taken to the home this afternoon where it will remain until the hour of the services. Members of General Shields council No. 888, Knights of Columbus, will meet at their hall at 7:30 tonight and march in a body to the home where they will recite the Rosary at 8 o’clock. Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas Kemp, Dave Higby, Fred Orvis, Irvin Cottrell, William Fry, Lawrence Stevens, Bert Stabler, C. I. Strong and Dale Morrow; Active pallbearers, Bert Hart, Mat McInerney, Lou Traul, James Pl Tracy, A.J. Schwartz and William McInerney.
