Mrs. Susie Bell Hughes, 84, widow of Carlton Hughes, died at 2 p.m. Wednesday in her home 709 North Ash Street. She was born February 9, 1859, in Des Moines county; was married to Carlton Hughes at West Burlington on September 1, 1878 and had made her home in Ottumwa the past 53 years. Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Benton Street Presbyterian church and the Modern Woodmen circle, 2. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Bernice Elliott of Los Angeles; two sons, Wayne of Elkhorn, Wisconsin and Charles of Woodstock, Illinois; and two sisters, Mrs. Lula Hillgardner of Mr. Pleasant and Mrs. Ada Herrold of Spokane, Washington. Her husband died in 1925. Funeral services will be held in Reece funeral home with the Rev. Estes of the First Baptist church in charge. Burial will be in the Ottumwa cemetery.
