Ernest A. Gustaveson, 52, day chief dispatcher for the Ottumwa division of the Burlington railroad, died at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Ottumwa hospital where he had been treated the past two weeks for a heart condition. His home is at 1202 Plum street. He became associated with the railroad in 1907, as a station helper at Dudley. He studied telegraphy and in April of 1917 he was named train dispatcher. In March of 1918 he became night chief dispatcher in Ottumwa and on January 16, 1939, was promoted to day chief dispatcher. He was a member of the Burlington Veterans’ association. Mr. Gustaveson was the son of John and Joseph Gustaveson and was born at Dudley, November 28, 1890. He married Irene Musgrove at Lucas June 9, 1909. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. C.H. Katzmark, Des Moines; a son Dwight W. Gustaveson, Ottumwa; a granddaughter, Gloria Katzmark, Des Moines; two brother, Everett Gustaveson, and Leo C. Gustaveson, both of Ottumwa, and two sisters, Mrs. B.A. Griffith and Mrs. S.W. Lowery, both of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his father on March 16, 1923.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Johnson funeral chapel, conducted by the Rev. Malvin H. Lundeen of the First Lutheran church. Burial will be in Ottumwa cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be J.C. Grisinger, C.J. Connett, F.B. Leonard A.A. Wright, E.W. Fritta and J.J. Ryan. Active pallbearers will be Carl Ketcham, Jack French, J. C. Starbuck, C.A. Walter, A.L. Tullis and O.C. Nally. The casket will be closed at the beginning of the service.
