Henry King, Retired City Auditor, Is Dead
Henry King, 71, of 421 North Sheridan avenue, died at 2:40 p.m. today at Ottumwa hospital following a lingering illness. He formerly was city auditor, retiring a few months ago because of ailing health. He was born in Davis county August 28, 1871, and was educated in Ottumwa high school, graduating in 1889. He later attended Ottumwa Business college. He was married to Flora M. Smith November 9, 1892, at Ottumwa. King was formerly bookkeeper and office manager for the Palistor Bros. Cigar Co. , later was a partner in the King Tabaco Co. and Sunnyside Oil Co. He became city auditor in 1929. He was also secretary treasurer of the Shaul cemetery association since 1906. He was a past secretary of the Lions club and was a deacon in the First Congregational church. A daughter Miss Lois King is an Ottumwa high school teacher.
Funeral services for Henry W. King, 71, of 421 North Sheridan avenue retired city auditor who died at 2:40 p.m. Saturday at Ottumwa hospital, were held at 2:30 p.m. today at Johnson's funeral chapel in charge of the Rev. John M. Blough pastor of the First Congregational church. Burial was in Shaul cemetery. Active pallbearers were George N. Kelley, John La Point, Max Riley, W.W. Munn, Fred Lang and Leo Griffin, honorary pallbearers A.H. Riley, E.A. Mowery, Dr. M. Bannister, W.T. Sisson, T.F. Nerfolt and M.F. Chisman. Mr. King is survived by his wife Flora to whom he had been married more than 50 years; one daughter, Miss Lois King, assistant Ottumwa high school principal, and two sisters, Mrs. J.B. Baker of Ottumwa and Mrs. T.W. Pixley of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Born in Davis county August 2, 1871, Mr. King had resided in Ottumwa for 61 years.
