Virgil O. Metcalf 54, died at 9 p.m. Thursday, December 10 at his home on route 5, after a brief illness. He was born December 23, 1887 at Osgood, Missouri, the son of William and Cyrena Metcalf. He attended the business college at Chillicothe Missouri, and Epworth seminary one year. He was a telegraph operator and station agent on the Milwaukee and Union Pacific railways for about 32 years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Masonic lodge with his membership at Rawlings, Wyoming. He was preceded in death by a son, Eugene Metcalf and by his father, William J. Metcalf and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Temple Metcalf and three children, Severs Metcalf, Icel Metcalf and Elwin Metcalf all of Ottumwa. He is also survived by his sister, Mrs. W.J. Metcalf of 134 Fairview Avenue and one granddaughter, Patricia Ann Metcalf. The body is at the Johnson funeral home awaiting the completion of funeral arrangements.
Funeral services for Virgil O. Metcalf, who died at 9 p.m. Thursday at his home on route 5, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday from the Johnson Funeral home. The Rev. Charles A. Albin, pastor of the Church of the Brethren, will be in charge of the services and burial will be in Ottumwa cemetery. Members of the Masonic lodge will conduct services at the chapel and will also furnish the pallbearers.
