Charles R. Dempster, a resident of Ottumwa since 1900 and well known throughout this part of the state, died suddenly of a heart attack at 9:15 p.m. Monday at his home, 502 Hamilton street. Mr. Dempster had been a representative on the Morton Salt Co. in this territory for more than 18 years. Prior to that connection, he had been in the clothing business here and only Monday he had assisted in caring for the Christmas business at the Cramblit & Poling store. He was born July 15, 1885, at What Cheer the son of William and Agnes Dempster, and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Dempster, and by two children Jean Dempster and James Dempster, both freshman students at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. William Dempster of Mt. Pleasant, and by the following three sisters, Mrs. E.W. Hass, Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Milton U'Ren San Francisco, Mrs. T.E. Wright, Ottumwa, and by one brother William Dempster, Bay City, Michigan. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church and the following three branches of the Masonic lodge; Empire lodge No. 269, A.F. & A.M.; Clinton chapter No. 9, R.A.M. and Ottumwa council No. 31 R.A.M. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday from the Lester Jay funeral home in charge of the Rev. Richard Paul Graebel, D.D. pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Interment will be in the Ottumwa cemetery.
