Cyrus Howard Shearer, 84, who had lived in Agency for 77 years, died at the Ottumwa hospital at 6 a.m. Wednesday. He was taken to the hospital Monday, after suffering a stroke and a hip fracture in a fall. Mr. Shearer, born in Indianapolis, September 21, 1857. he came to Agency in 1865, and had been a resident ever since that time. As a young man he first worked as a printer's devil for the Agency paper established by the late Charles Morehouse. Later he was a compositor on the Ottumwa Democrat. He went to Pacific Junction as a baggage master for the Burlington for a few months, and later was clerk at an Agency store. For several years he worked as a barber, and in later life ran a restaurant. Mr. Shearer was a member of the Agency Methodist church, and the Woodmen lodge.
He married Lizzie H. Dunbar in January, 1887. She preceded him in death in December of 1941. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Hugh Morrison, Agency; three grandchildren, Francis Rutz, Rockford, Illinois, Elva Rutz of Agency and George Rutz of Ottumwa, and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Agency Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. Merton D. Wyatt of the church. Burial will be in the Agency cemetery. The body will remain at the Johnson's funeral chapel in Ottumwa until Friday noon.
