Woman Who Came Here In Covered Wagon Dies

Mrs. Exira Caroline Mulford Prosser, 92, one of the few persons in Ottumwa who came to the county by covered wagon, died at her home on route 6, at 4:40 a.m. today. She was the daughter of Lewis and Amy Amanda Mulford, born in Morrow county, Ohio, December 24, 1849. she came to Ottumwa with her parents when she was 4 years old, making the trip overland behind a yoke of oxen. The Mulford's settled on a farm which is now on South Milner street, within two miles of the Jefferson school. On the next farm the Prosser family lived. She and John C. Prosser were married July 10, 1869, at the Mulford home. He preceded her in death June 25, 1920. Mrs. Prosser was one of the oldest members of the First Methodist church in Ottumwa. She joined when 13 years of age. Surviving are two sons, Charles I. at home, and Harvey John Prosser of route 6, and two grandchildren, Russell and Clark Prosser of Ottumwa, route 6. She was preceded in death, in addition to husband, by two daughters, Rosa May and Edna Pearl and by three sons, Harry, Walter and Herbert. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the residence, in charge of the Rev. Herbert Allen Keck D.D. of the First Methodist church, and the Rev. C.R. Reed of the Willard street Methodist church. Burial will be in the Shaul cemetery. The casket will be taken to the home from the Johnson funeral chapel tonight. Pallbearers will be Tom and Dave Michael, Earl Withrow, Harold and Charles Yahn and George Maither.
