Services Tuesday For World War Vet
Bert O. Clements, 46, of 311 West Fourth street, died at the Veterans hospital at Hines, Illinois, Saturday morning, after a long illness. Mr. Clements served in the World war with the 26th Division, 101st Infantry. He enlisted September 19, 1917 at Batavia and was in service 22 months. He lost his right arm in the Meuse-Argonne. He was discharged May 13, 1919. He was a member of the Purple Heart, and of the Disabled American Veterans. He was and honorary member of the Marine Corps of Phoenix, Arizona and was a member of O.B. Nelson post No. 3, American Legion. The son of Franklin and Mellie Clements, he was born at Bentonsport, December 8, 1895. He had lived in Ottumwa practically all his life. Surviving are his wife, Mable; two children, Frankie Lee and Marcene Ruth at home; a sister, Mrs. Victor Mason of Batavia; five brothers, David of Gaylord, Minnesota, and Cecil, Charles, William and Earl in the state of Washington. Funeral services will be held from the Johnson funeral chapel at 3 P.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. Charles E. McDowell of the Fundamentalist Baptist church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn cemetery. The American Legion will have military services at the grave and members will serve as pallbearers.
