Fall Fatal To Man At Iron Works
George McCordell, 57-year-old millwright at the Ottumwa Iron Works, died at the Ottumwa hospital at 9:55 a.m. today of injuries in a fall while at work. Workmen at the plant said Mr. McCordell was oiling a machine, and was standing about six feet above the floor on a small ladder. No one saw him fall, but he was found on the floor unconscious. The accident occurred at about 8 a.m. It is thought he may have suffered a sudden illness of some kind while at work. He did not regain consciousness in the hospital. He suffered severe head injuries in the fall. Evidently he struck the back of his head as he fell. Mr. McCordell lived at 701 Boone avenue, He was born in Iowa April 18, 1884, and had lived in Ottumwa for the past 25 years. He had worked for the Iron Works for 15 years. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lowell Reinier of Davis county and Mrs. Ronald Simpson of Ottumwa; a son Harold McCordell of Ottumwa and seven grandchildren. The body is at the Johnson funeral chapel pending the completion of funeral services. Funeral services for George McCordell, 701 Boone avenue, who died Thursday, will be held from the Johnson funeral chapel at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in charge of the Rev. L.E. Welshons. Burial will be in the Shaul cemetery. Pallbearers will be fellow workmen at the Iron Works, George Swanson, Elroy Brown, Harvey Freshwater, Albert Hartley, Floyd Reed and Charles Hart.
