Ottumwan A Flying Cadet, Dies In Texas
Harold Heap Becomes Ill At Texas Post
Harold Vokes Heap, 27, widely known Ottumwan and son of Mr. and Mrs. E.V. Heap, 134 South Iowa avenue, died at 1 p.m. Monday at New Station hospital Ft. Sam Houston Texas. Prior to becoming ill he was a navigator in the army air corps, stationed at Kelly Field, San Antonio. He enlisted in the army June 5, 1941, as a flying cadet and completed the 15 weeks training course for navigators rating. He was born in Mason City January 20, 1915. After his family moved to Ottumwa. Harold attended the Ottumwa high school graduating in 1931. He attended the Parsons college in 1933 and 1934 and was a member of Omega Kappa Tau and Alpha Kappa Xi. He was on the Parsons track, basketball and baseball teams. He then transferred to Iowa State college, where he was graduated in 1938 with a degree in chemical engineering. At Ames he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha and also the American Institute of Chemical Engineering , student branch. He worked for John Morrell & Co. in Ottumwa, where his father is a department superintendent. Harold was in the general office and in the superintendents office. Before going into the army he worked as a supervisor at the Sylvania Industrial Corp. of Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was member of the East End Presbyterian church. While in Ottumwa he sang with the Morrell Male choir. Surviving are his parents, a brother Jack at home, and two sisters, Lillian at home and Mrs. Gelvin Johnson of Ottumwa. Funeral services for Harold Vokes Heap, former army air corps cadet and son of Mr. and Mrs. E.V. Heap, 134 South Iowa avenue, who died at 1 p.m. Monday in an army hospital in Texas will be held at the East End Presbyterian church Friday at 2 p.m. The Rev. George T. Hubbard will be in charge, assisted by the Rev. W.J. Creswell. Burial will be in the Ottumwa cemetery. The casket will remain at Johnson's funeral chapel until noon Friday, when it will be taken to the church. Pallbearers will be Carl McCrory, Rex Williamson, Bernard Barrier, Bruce Hallgren, Leo Barnett and Edward F. Randall.
