Lew Spangler, 88, Veteran Farmer, Dies
Lived On Same Farm His Entire Life
Lew Spangler, 88, widely known Green Township farmer, died at his home on the Lake road nine miles southwest of Ottumwa at 1:30 a.m. Thursday. He lived in the same farm all his life, except for four years spent in California recently. He was born in a log house on the farm, December 15, 1853, two years after his parents came to the country. He was the son of Samuel and Sarah Spangler. He married Laura Arnold January 12, 1879. They had two children, Laura Arnold Spangler died in June 1887. He married Ella Berry, March 25, 1890, who preceded him in death November 2, 1936. Surviving are two children Walter of Blakesburg route 1, and Mrs. Elma Argus of Vallejo California, three grandchildren, Mrs. Lucille Stewart of San Francisco, Loraine Argus of Vallejo and Mrs. Geraldine Hatton of Kankakee, Illinois and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters. Mrs. Clayton Smith of Ottumwa and Mrs. Susan Bachman of Los Angeles. He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Johnson funeral chapel, with the Rev. M.C. Campbell of the First Church of the Nazarene in charge. Burial will be in the Pleasant Ridge cemetery. The casket will be taken to the residence Saturday morning and returned to the chapel Sunday. Funeral services for the Lew Spangler who died Thursday will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Johnson funeral chapel, with the Rev. M.C. Campbell in charge. Burial will be in the Pleasant Ridge cemetery. The body will be brought from the home to the chapel at 10 a.m. Pallbearers will be Guy, Curtis and Robert Reinhard, William Proctor, Harve Orman and John Johnson
